About

About Deep BioStrategy

Deep BioStrategy is partner-led by Ivan A. Valdez, PhD and Alfred Atallah, JD, combining scientific depth, translational judgment, and biotech business experience to help life-science teams make clearer strategic decisions. Metabolic disease is its center of gravity, and a focused advisory bench is brought in by scope when a question calls for complementary expertise.

Leadership

Partner-led scientific strategy

Deep BioStrategy is led by two partners who pair deep scientific interpretation with biotech business and transaction-informed judgment.

Ivan A. Valdez, PhD
Co-founder

Ivan A. Valdez, PhD

Scientific strategy, metabolic biology, translational evidence

Ivan brings deep training in metabolic biology, diabetes research, islet biology, and translational science. His work focuses on helping life-science teams connect mechanism, evidence, biomarkers, endpoints, and scientific narrative into clearer strategic decisions.

Ivan's perspective has been shaped by training across several leading metabolic-disease research environments, including the Joslin Diabetes Center / Harvard, UT Health San Antonio, and UT Southwestern. Across these settings, he learned from scientific communities whose work helped define modern diabetes biology, insulin resistance, adipose-tissue biology, β-cell dysfunction, and translational metabolic research.

  • PhD, Biological and Biomedical Sciences, Harvard University / Joslin Diabetes Center
  • Postdoctoral training in diabetes and metabolism at UT Health San Antonio
  • Research experience at UT Southwestern
  • Former healthcare strategy consultant at Fletcher Spaght
  • Scientific focus: islet biology, beta-cell function, incretin biology, type 2 diabetes, obesity, translational metabolism
Alfred Atallah, JD
Co-founder

Alfred Atallah, JD

Biotech business strategy, client-facing advisory, and transaction-informed judgment

Alfred brings a JD-trained business and client-facing perspective shaped by experience across biotech, biopharma, venture, and strategic advisory contexts. His role at Deep BioStrategy focuses on business development, partnership strategy, client engagement, and translating scientific opportunity into commercially and operationally credible paths.

Together, Ivan and Alfred combine deep scientific interpretation with business-development and transaction-informed judgment. Deep BioStrategy helps teams evaluate where biology is strong, where evidence is incomplete, and what decisions need to be made before capital, partnerships, or clinical-development plans are locked in.

Center of Gravity

Depth where it matters

The practice is grounded in diabetes, obesity, and metabolic disease — incretin biology, islet biology and beta-cell function, glucagon biology, and translational metabolism — and brings mechanistic depth together with the strategic judgment to turn it into clear direction.

Engagements are partner-led: Ivan and Alfred lead engagements directly, drawing on the focused advisory bench only when a scoped question calls for complementary expertise.

Focused Advisory Bench

Specialized expertise, engaged by scope

Deep BioStrategy is partner-led by Ivan A. Valdez, PhD and Alfred Atallah, JD. When a scoped question calls for complementary expertise, specialized advisors may contribute perspective across clinical strategy, commercialization, neuroscience, cancer biology, and biomedical science.

Marie Atallah, PhD
Marie Atallah, PhD
Clinical Strategy & Behavioral Health Advisor

Clinical psychologist and digital health leader with experience in care-model design, behavioral health innovation, program development, patient engagement, outcomes frameworks, and behavior-change strategy.

Herminio M. Guajardo, PhD
Herminio M. Guajardo, PhD
Neuroscience Advisor

Penn-trained neuroscientist, Harvard Medical School / Boston Children's research fellow, and Dean of Health Professions with experience in biomedical research, healthcare education, workforce training, and translational program leadership.

Karina Gonzalez Herrera, PhD
Karina Gonzalez Herrera, PhD
Cancer Biology Advisor

Harvard-trained cancer biology scientist with experience in biomedical research, STEM education, mentorship, program development, and scientific training. She currently serves as Associate Dean at Yale School of Medicine / Office of Collaborative Excellence.

Advisors may contribute when their expertise is relevant to a scoped engagement. Advisor participation does not imply endorsement by or representation of any current employer or institution. Standard Deep BioStrategy engagements remain scientific and strategic advisory unless additional expertise is separately scoped in writing.

Operating Model

How engagements work

Every engagement begins with a confidential scoping conversation and a short written scope before work starts, so expectations, deliverables, and boundaries are clear from the outset.

Scoped

A brief scoping call, then a written scope defining the question, deliverable, and timeline before work begins.

Partner-led

Ivan and Alfred lead engagements directly; the focused advisory bench is brought in only when a question calls for complementary expertise.

Confidential

Client information and findings are treated as confidential; deliverables are evidence-graded and decision-oriented.

For the full set of offerings and how engagements are scoped, see Services.

Boundaries. Deep BioStrategy provides scientific and strategic advisory only. Legal, regulatory, investment, clinical, and medical advice are outside standard engagements unless separately scoped in writing with the appropriate qualified contributor. This work is educational scientific-strategy analysis — not medical advice, investment advice, or drug promotion.
